Just the other day I convinced you all (except Mavis) that chocolate covered pretzels were the perfect potluck food.  This summer we attended a ham radio field day (yes, The Husband is a ham geek but a damn sexy one if you ask me) and I brought my new go-to potluck food. Here’s what was left of them after the first pass.

Yes, the first pass.  They fared well.  Quite well I think – aside from one guy complaining (joking? it’s hard to tell with ham geek humor sometimes) about mustard pretzels being on the dessert table that is, although I’d like it noted he still took one.  The Husband went back to field day after the kids went to bed for the night and he watched a guy snatch the very last pretzel.  So I guess I was totally right about them being the perfect food to sit out for extended periods of time.

If you recall I also promised to share the rest of the potluck food. I focused solely on the dessert table for the post.  Yes, yes I did risk looking like a crazy fool in front of a bunch of people who have no idea I have a blog just to snap pictures of half eaten trays of food for you.  Because I love you all.  Or at least like.  I at least like you all.  Or at least most of you.

Anyway, here’s a breakdown of the dessert table.

The generic brownie.  Somebody always brings brownies.  They did okay. Not great, but solidly in the middle.

Store bought cake.  These did not fare well at all.  Nobody goes to a potluck for store bought cake people, so stay away from bringing these.  They sure were pretty though weren’t they?

I have no idea what these were.  Some sort of pastry?  It appears to have been pretty popular despite being purchased.

Apple pie.  Let’s face it, apple pie is always a winner no matter where you go or who you are with. So if you have the time, feel free to make one of these (message me your address if you need a taste tester mmmm K cause I love pie.)

This was some sort of dump cake I think.  It was popular . . .

. . . so was the chocolate cake with caramel frosting.  Nothing beats a good homemade caramel frosting if you ask me (and apparently all the other folks who devoured this.)

Fruit.  I’m tossing this into the dessert category here because it was with the desserts.  I devoured the cherries because cherries are expensive.  Must.  Get.  Money’s.  Worth.  From.  Free.  Potluck.

For the record, the pre-sliced cherries made me look less like I’d been gutting chickens.  I had some blood red fingers after pulling pits out for Sweetey Petey.

Watermelon is a classic and somebody always brings it.  It also always gets eaten.

This used to be cheesecake.  Clearly it was popular.  I bet Paula Deen’s mini cheesecake recipe would be a great option.  You all know that one right?  Quick, easy and already portioned.  I’ll have to keep that in mind . . .

There were chocolate chip cookies too.  I forgot to snap a picture but I tried one.  Despite their claim of being “famous chocolate chip cookies” they were meh if you ask me.

So there you have it.  The potluck dessert table.

P.S.   My mom called me out on my lackluster blogging schedule the other day (over the phone of course since she has no clue how to leave comments.)  So, for the official record here are the reasons I’ve been a bad blogger lately:

1)  I’ve been painting the half finished wall in the Don Draper room (that’s what we call our family/play/TV/bar room.)

2)  I’ve been stripping painted over wallpaper again.  This is actually going faster than the last time I attempted this.  Possibly due to lack of blogging.

3)  I bought a carpet cleaner and have been cleaning the carpets (the Mother-in-Law will be happy about this because she noted the state of my carpets last time they visited.  Yeah, they are bad.  I have two kids and two dogs so they are bad.  Less bad now though thanks to my new Hoover baby.)

4)  I’ve been working on Sweetey Petey’s birthday party.  I am having Chipotle cater it so a lot of the food stress is gone, but I picked a pretty random theme (Giraffe’s Digging) and have not only created my only image for invites, but am also attempting one of those giant plywood cut-outs you stick your face through.  It’ll be of Giraffe’s.  Driving a construction digger.  And it’s gonna be awesome.

5)  I’m 95% sure that 90% of my readers these days are friends or relatives that I’m friends with on Facebook so they know the haps already.

I do still have lots to say and a ton of drafts started and some fun house projects to share eventually.  Very soon I’ll be starting a new series called The Patrick Project as well.  I’ll leave you to ponder on what that might be . . .

In that case . . . HAPPY LATE THANKSGIVING!

Since I consider myself a Food Satire Blogger I’d like to do things a little differently around here today.  Most food bloggers will be showing you beautifully staged photos of what they ate or will be eating (ok I did that but just that one time and it wasn’t staged very well so it barely counts) or giving you a link to their Thanksgiving Day Pinterest board or will tell you all the things they are thankful for or will have spent the last month detailing recipe after recipe for you to duplicate on the big day.

I’d like instead to share how we already did the big day.  Yes, we already had Thanksgiving.  It was last Saturday because my Brother-in-Law has to work Thursday night.  It seems Black Friday has become Black Thanksgiving and no that doesn’t just mean a burned turkey.

Stop shopping for DVD players on Thanksgiving day people.  Just stop. I would be very thankful for that.

So here’s how we did Thanksgiving.  And by “did” I mean really did as in past tense as in the food has been eaten already.  Here we go.

We had turkey.  It was apparently from Trader Joe’s of which my mother seemed immensely proud.  She was less proud of the fact she accidentally left the baggie of giblets in the cavity of the turkey.  No, no, I take that back, she didn’t seem unproud of that.

Speaking of turkey here’s what was left in the bottom of the roaster.  We aren’t a make gravy from the drippings kind of family.  We’re a open a jar of gravy kind of family.  Simple but oh so tasty.

Whenever I attempt to bring a chocolate-free dessert into our home,

The Husband only has one thing to say.

Were they out of chocolate?

Lemon bars.  Were they out of chocolate?

Oatmeal cookies.  Were they out of chocolate?

Banana Cajeta ice cream that was ten bucks a freaking pint.  Were they out of chocolate?

Momofuku’s super fun funfetti Birthday Cake that cost sixty bucks for the Cookbook and specialty supplies alone not to mention the time it takes to meld the four recipes together into one cake.  Were they out of chocolate?

So you can imagine The Husband’s response when I informed him I was making Sour Cream Raisin Pie for some new friends we were having over for dinner one Saturday night.

Were they out of chocolate?

The Husband went as far as to tweet an apology to our friends and promise he would have Oreos in reserve as a proper dessert.

For the record, “they” were not out of chocolate.  Sometimes I just like to mix things up.  I don’t make the exact same recipes every holiday like grandma did.  I don’t eat vegetarian every Monday for “Meatless Monday” and I don’t always like chocolate in my dessert.

Day 23 in the January Blog a Day challenge is Dessert.

Being the multi-tasker that I am, I’m also combining this with a little thing called Blog Love and the Liebster award.  You can check out my Blog Love page here, but to sum it all up for you: I think blog awards are mostly a pyramid scheme.  I say mostly because I have an ego just like the rest of you that likes to be stroked on occasion.  Whether blog awards are a desperate attempt to bring in more page views or just a well intentioned gimmick I do like getting them and I may walk around the house in my comfy pants and hooded sweatshirt and BIC headband all puffed out for a few days.

So, the Liebster award.

According to Cinnamon who awarded this danged thing to me, the Liebster is a great way for bloggers to interact.  Except I don’t nominate other bloggers like I’m supposed to and I don’t answer the random questions like I’m supposed to.  For my take on this award, I chose instead to share one of my favorite bloggers with you in the hopes you’ll all find a new blog love yourself.  Today it’s Ann of Cooking Dangerously.  I mentioned Ann briefly this month already on Day 14 Food where I posted my submission to her Dangerous Shepherd’s Pie Contest.

The thing I like most about Ann is not only does she do her own thing by cooking with crazy “dangerous” ingredients and not falling prey to the food blog bandwagon, but her posts always show me a different side to food and always leave me with something fresh to think about.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us and you’re all deeply entrenched in the seasonal favorite of the moment, peppermint, I feel that it’s safe to bring up a topic that has been weighing heavily on my taste buds.

Pumpkin.

Pumpkin was last season’s “it-food” and nary a food blog neglected to cover it.  Pumpkin made an appearance on Facebook posts and Twitter tweets, Instagram and recipe after recipe after recipe.  Pumpkin chili.  Pumpkin rolls.  Pumpkin cookies.  Pumpkin oatmeal.  Pumpkin ice cream.  Pumpkin soup.  Pumpkin coffee.  Pumpkin smoothies.  Pumpkin bread.  Pumpkin pancakes.  Pumpkin pasta.  Pumpkin fudge.  And of course pumpkin pie.  Ugh.

Not ugh for pumpkin pie.  I LOVE pumpkin pie.  I even asked for it instead of cake for my birthday this year.  Of course what I got was cheesecake and I had to make the birthday pie myself a few days later, but no worries.  I love making pumpkin pie almost as much as I love eating it.  And that’s pretty much all the time.  I love eating pumpkin pie all the time.  Not just in the fall.

But I segue.  My love of pumpkin pie is not the issue here.  The world’s fickle love of pumpkin only surrounding the Thanksgiving holiday is.

That’s right, I’m calling you all out.

Because here’s the thing.  Here’s the thing that has been bothering me like squash bugs on a zucchini plant.

CANNED PUMPKIN IS NOT SEASONAL!

I’m sure there are a few of you out there who roast your own pumpkins to get your seasonal fix, but I’m guessing the majority of you bust open your can opener and crank open that store bought 15 ouncer to mix in with your morning oatmeal and grande extra gigante foamy latte frappe cappuccino spiced chai soy half caf coconut coffee.

So may I repeat.

CANNED PUMPKIN IS NOT SEASONAL!
